Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after walking out of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League camp in Copenhagen. The incident followed a dispute with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. In a lengthy Instagram post, Ronaldo expressed frustration at being left on the bench for Portugal’s match against Norway, despite an earlier agreement with Jorge Jesus that he would play the last 30 minutes. The Federation announced his suspension on 9 October 2026, in accordance with its disciplinary code, which allows suspensions of one to six months and fines of up to 1,020 euros for unauthorized departures.

FPF President Clarifies Cristiano Ronaldo’s Future After Suspension

Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future has been uncertain since Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign was cut short by a 1-0 loss to the current champions, Spain. Speculation about Ronaldo’s possible retirement was put to rest when he was named in the squad for the Nations League fixtures. However, doubts resurfaced due to the ongoing feud between the Al Nassr forward and head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo later clarified his stance, writing:
“If I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals, I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”
Despite a harsh response from Jorge Jesus’ legal team, who claimed Christinano Ronaldo’s “actions, behavior, and obsession with breaking certain records” make them forget all the good things he has given them.
The Portuguese Football Federation has a different stance; Pedro Proença dubbed the 41-year-old as the best of all time, adding that:
“The Federation, the coach, all the teammates are aligned: we want Cristiano back. I expect him back already during the November international break. Cristiano is also willing to return. He’s the best of all time.”
