Unknown gunmen killed Obukobo Desmond Oghenerukhewe, a final-year student at the University of Benin, who was popularly known as Mayor.
The University of Benin in Edo State has expressed its condemnation of the killing of a final year student, Mayor, who was a Kegite chief of the institution and a student of the Department of Public Administration. The incident occurred on Monday at 9 pm, when he was shot in the face at close range.
The Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, announced in a statement on Tuesday that the university management is collaborating with the police and internal security to apprehend the perpetrator. The statement also assured other students that the management is taking measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again on the university campus.
Edo State Police Command
According to the Edo State Police Command, the killing was cult-related, and the victim was a member of the Maphites secret cult group. The killers were members of the Black Axe, also known as Aye.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, reported that the victim was found dead in Hall 3, and items like a voter’s card, school ID card, and other belongings were found with him. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and the management of the University of Benin condemned the killing, with the NYCN urging security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. The university management is collaborating with the police and internal security to ensure that such incidents do not occur again on the campus.
