Alex Honnold, an American professional rock climber, is renowned for climbing great heights without the use of ropes or gear. He has made history several times by not just climbing, but climbing without ropes and gear, which makes it a spectacle, as his method is usually a lot more risky.  On June 3, 2017, Alex Honnold became the first person to free solo El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He completed the 3,000-foot rock wall route in just under four hours.

What is Taipei 101, and suitable for climbing?

Taipei 101 was the tallest in the world from 2004 to 2009. It is located in Taipei, Taiwan. The tower houses commercial and residential spaces, from offices to restaurants, and indoor and outdoor observatories.

Taipei 101 was officially the world’s tallest building when it was opened on December 31, 2004, until it was dethroned by the Burj Khalifa in 2009. At the time of its completion, it was the world’s first skyscraper to exceed half a kilometer. It is currently the tallest building in Taiwan and the eleventh tallest in the world.

On why he chose this building as his next big conquest, Alex Honnold told Tudum:

“…Because it’s really hard to get permission to climb a building, and I have permission, I have to take advantage of it and climb the building. Basically, it’s just rare to get this kind of opportunity, so you gotta jump when you can.”

Honnold also added that one of the reasons he is making a shift from rock faces to skycapper is because “it’s [Taipei 101 ] uniquely suited for climbing.”
