in justification of stripping Senegal of the title, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) cited that the Senegalese team broke CAF regulations when they walked off the pitch during the final. According to the confederation, the walk-off violated Articles 82 and 84 of CAF regulations, which provide that where a team walks off the pitch in a football competition without the referee’s consent, or before the end of the match, such team is deemed to have abandoned the match. the article also added that the said team would be adjudged to have lost the match three goals to zero.

stripping Morocco of the AFCON title is not the only controversy fueling the feud between the Moroccan and Senegalese sides, but also the detention of 18 Senegalese fans who have allegedly been detained in Morocco over alleged rioting. Reports also claim that the Moroccan courts have handed down prison sentences ranging from three months to a full year to the 18 supporters for misconduct and rioting during the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Abdoulaye Fall, president of the Senegal Football Association, has urged a calm and measured approach to resolve the situation of the 18 Senegalese fans detained in Morocco.
“We must take a step back to find solutions to this situation.”
